We tend to wait until the last minute to do anything that has to do with finance: pay bills or apply for the right credit card. If you need a credit card fast to take on your vacation, look for offers that offer instant credit card approval online.

The way it usually works is that you fill out an online form on a credit card issuer's web site, and submit it. If all the information is provided and the automated system can access your credit records, you can receive your answer in a couple minutes on your computer screen.

Information that you receive is whether you qualified for instant credit card approval. If you did qualify, you usually find out your new credit limit right there.

Once approved, it can take a couple of weeks to actually receive your new card in the mail. That may be too long for some. You can usually call the credit card issuer in questions, such as Amex, Chase or Citi, and find out how long it will take them to print and send your card through the mail.

Another option is to try to find an issuer that is willing to expedite your card printing process. Orchard Bank for example, offers a Rush Processing option. The way it works is that you submit your application online and select Rush Processing. If you application for instant credit card approval goes through, the issuer says that you receive your new card in 3 days. Be sure to find out what the Rush Processing fee is.
